A synthetic analog of the immunomodulatory peptide tuftsin, researched for its anxiolytic, mood-stabilizing, and cognitive-enhancing properties without sedation or dependence.

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide derived from tuftsin, a naturally occurring tetrapeptide involved in immune regulation. Developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences alongside Semax, Selank has been approved in Russia as a prescription anxiolytic since 2009.
Unlike benzodiazepines and other conventional anxiolytics, Selank does not cause sedation, cognitive impairment, or physical dependence. It modulates GABA neurotransmission and influences the balance of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, producing anxiolytic effects through a fundamentally different mechanism than traditional anti-anxiety medications.
Selank’s effects arise from its influence on GABAergic signaling, neurotrophic factors, and immune-neuroendocrine crosstalk.
Selank’s primary research application is generalized anxiety. Its GABAergic modulation produces calming effects comparable to benzodiazepines in animal models, but without sedation, motor impairment, or withdrawal symptoms upon discontinuation.
Research suggests Selank preserves cognitive function during acute and chronic stress. By stabilizing BDNF levels and reducing neuroinflammation, it may prevent the memory and attention deficits typically caused by elevated cortisol.
As a tuftsin derivative, Selank retains immunomodulatory properties. It has been studied for its ability to normalize immune function in both immunosuppressed and hyperactive immune states, particularly during periods of psychological stress.
Selank’s influence on serotonin metabolism and enkephalin stability positions it as a research candidate for mood disorders. Preclinical data shows antidepressant-like effects without the typical SSRI side-effect profile.
Selank is administered intranasally. Its short active duration requires multiple daily doses, though its neuroplastic and immune effects accumulate over multi-week protocols.
| Protocol | Dose | Frequency | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anxiolytic | 250–500 mcg | 2–3x daily | Intranasal, spaced throughout the day |
| Cognitive Support | 250 mcg | 2x daily | Often stacked with Semax for synergy |
| Immune Support | 500 mcg | 2x daily | Run 2–4 week cycles during high-stress periods |
